Update (July 2012):

As we near the end of the first-year training sessions, a core cohort of 14 new patient engagement researchers in training is preparing to design three group research projects, submit proposals for ethics approval, and carry out their research. In a year from now, they will publish their findings online through the University of Calgary Press. Proposed research topics consider the interests of patients, health professionals, and policy makers.

Patient engagement researchers are going to become a significant new voice in health planning and health promotion. The Bone and Joint Strategic Clinical Network (BJSCN) have first asked for help to find new ways for patients to be full partners in health care planning and service delivery for osteoarthritis. Now patient researchers have been welcomed by four of the first six Strategic Clinical Networks. We will be watching as the first patient engagement researchers take up these new roles alongside health professionals, planners, and researchers.
